About MLA’s Human Nutrition Research Program


Nutrition is a key objective in MLA’s strategic plan. This is achieved by investing in human nutrition research to increase our knowledge of the health benefits of red meat and its place in a balanced diet. These evidence-based findings support communications on the nutritional attributes of red meat to health professionals and the broader community.

Research funded as part of MLA’s Human Nutrition Research Program increase our understanding of the nutritional value of red meat, its contribution to public health and effective healthy red meat diets for promoting health and managing common health conditions.

To ensure credibility and relevance of the research, MLA consults widely with nutrition experts, practitioners and policy-makers.

Since 2000, MLA has funded a wide range of nutrition research projects aligned with the Federal Government’s national and rural research priorities to promote good health and well-being for all Australians. These research projects are listed here.

MLA is primarily funded by transaction levies paid by producers on livestock sales (which fund marketing programs), and dollar-for-dollar funds contributed by the Federal Government for investment in research and development only. We also receive contributions from processor and live export bodies, as well as cooperative contributions from individual processors, wholesalers, foodservice operators and retailers.
