Have you heard that high protein diets aren’t safe?

This is a myth. Scientific research clearly shows that people on a higher protein, low fat diet show no adverse effects on:

  • Bowel health
  • Renal health
  • Bone health

Bowel health

Weight loss itself may be more important for cancer prevention and reducing bowel cancer risk than type of diet or specific foods. A recent CSIRO study found no major differences between a higher protein, low fat diet or a high carbohydrate, low fat diet on bowel health markers with both showing protective effects due to weight loss and the high fibre content of both diets.1

Renal health

Studies looking at the effect of dietary protein on kidney function have not found any problems in either people with normal or mildly impaired renal function. 2,3

Bone health

Although some loss in bone density is to be expected with significant weight reduction, one study found a lower rate of decrease on a higher protein diet.4
