End of year exams

With end of year exams looming for students across the country, brain power, including attention, memory and learning is top of mind. Eating smart is a key ingredient to successful study preparation.

Hints and tips for keeping on top form during the exam period

  • Drink lots of water – The brain needs water to work and fatigue sets in if the body is not adequately hydrated
  • Don’t skip breakfast – Having something to fuel the brain is very important, even if it’s only a milk drink
  • Eat red meat as part of a balanced diet – Red meat 3 to 4 times a week helps to prevent low levels of iron which can affect concentration, memory and learning abilities and also provides other essential nutrients such as zinc, omega-3 and B vitamins
  • Drink caffeinated and energy drinks in moderation – A little caffeine, from coffee or energy drinks, raises alertness and overcomes tiredness, but too much can leave you sleepless and irritable
  • Take the time to enjoy family meals - They provide the perfect study break and have even been shown to improve performance at school [i] [ii]
  • Keep active – Take time out to exercise. Exercise has been shown to alleviate stress, clear the mind and help you sleep better
  • Finally – Remember that you can only do your best. Try to avoid placing unrealistic pressure on yourself
